The town of Szék, situated just 40 kilometres from Kolozsvár, is an emblematic place for dance house enthusiasts. Due to its isolation, traditional dress, parlour dance houses, and storytelling gatherings remained part of everyday life here even in the sixties and seventies.
In 1971, Budapest dancers experienced here the wonder of young people dancing freely to live music, improvising. Inspired by this experience, they organized the first dance house—then still closed to the public—on 6 May 1972 at the book club on Liszt Ferenc square, announced as "dance house – just as in Szék." The unique music and dance culture of this once-prosperous settlement, known for its salt mines and fish ponds, its distinctively recognizable black and red traditional dress, and its richly decorated material culture, captivates scholars and folk culture enthusiasts again and again. On our Szék day, we offer our interested guests a taste of this world; through invited visitors and evoked moments, they can imagine what it was like to live and celebrate as members of a settlement of three streets, organized according to strict social order.
